Kanye West is the world’s worst event planner.
Since last Friday, the 41-year-old hip-hop luminary has subjected fans to not one, but two disastrous live streaming events on the barely functional WAV app. The first event took place last week in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, to celebrate the release of his eighth studio album, ye; the latest party commenced in Los Angeles for his collaborative album with Kid Cudi, titled Kids See Ghosts.
The Kids See Ghosts listening party was originally set to begin streaming at 8 p.m. PST, but it quickly became clear the album’s creators had other plans. Repeated visits to WAV revealed delays at 10- and 30-minute increments, and at one point, the app crashed altogether. West, Cudi and WAV all hyped the live stream earnestly on Twitter on Thursday, but offered little explanation for the delay. Finally, at 10:45 p.m. PST, the rumblings of an album began; Kids See Ghosts had arrived.
Roughly 150-200 friends and industry colleagues huddled around an enormous bonfire outside a nondescript building as the album roared over the speakers. West grinned and bounced next to Cudi, his former protégé and G.O.O.D. Music signee who collaborated on some of West’s most memorable songs, including “All of the Lights” and “Welcome to Heartbreak.”
