On her first full day as a candidate for governor, the subway system made Cynthia Nixon’s point for her.
The “Sex & the City” star was held up on her way to her very first event in Brownsville, Brooklyn, due to subway delays — a problem she lay at the feet of Gov. Cuomo.
“I got here just in the nick of time. I allowed an hour and a half for what should have been a 30 minute ride,” Nixon told the crowd. “Cuomo’s MTA.”
Nixon’s delayed commute had been well-documented by her team on Twitter — including in a post that showed her shrugging her arms in the universal gesture of straphanger frustration.
“That thing when you’re headed to talk about fixing the subways and your train goes out of service. #CuomosMTA,” tweeted Rebecca Katz, a consultant working on Nixon’s bid.
But the subway was just one line of attack for Nixon.
The education activist, actress and close friend of the governor’s nemesis Mayor de Blasio, leveled numerous slams against Cuomo at her roll-out in a Pentecostal church in an area home mainly to minority voters, with whom Cuomo’s last challenger, Zephyr Teachout failed to gain traction.
She assailed him as a tool of Republicans who has helped prop them up in the State Senate through his support of the Independent Democratic Conference, and as a man for whom she voted but who presided over a state more unequal than it had ever been.
“If Washington is a swamp, Albany is a cesspool,” Nixon said “Andrew Cuomo promised to clean up Albany but instead he and his cronies have cleaned up for themselves. There is a reason that people close to Andrew Cuomo keep winding up under indictment for corruption.”
Nixon referenced Joseph Percoco, who she called Cuomo’s “right-hand man” and who was convicted on corruption charges last week.
She also hit Cuomo for his failure to raise funds from small donors, saying just 0.1% of his donations had come from…
