The political divide was very much in evidence Monday after President Donald Trump announced his nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh and those on the right applauded, but those on the left expressed stunned anger at the pick.
Here are some of the reactions to the nomination
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said that he was completely opposed to the nomination of Kavanaugh in a statement released minutes after the announcement.
“I will oppose Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination with everything I have, and I hope a bipartisan majority will do the same,” Schumer said. “The stakes are simply too high for anything less.”
“Judge Kavanaugh got the nomination because he passed this litmus test, not because he’ll be an impartial judge on behalf of all Americans,” Schumer continued. “If he were to be confirmed, women’s reproductive rights would be in the hands of five men on the Supreme Court.”
“If Americans believe in a woman’s right to make her own reproductive choices, and that health insurance companies shouldn’t be able to charge people more based on pre-existing conditions, now is the time to fight,” he concluded.
“A serious jurist known for careful deliberation”
Conservative Senator Ben Sasse (R-Neb.), a frequent Trump critic, responded positively to the nomination.
“Brett Kavanaugh is a serious jurist known for careful deliberation,” he said. “This doesn’t matter to many on the left.”
“Sadly, the #Resistance is going to try to bork him by portraying him as a cross between Lex Luthor and Darth Vader,” Sasse continued. “This isn’t the apocalypse – this is an opportunity to thoroughly review Kavanaugh’s record, debate this seriously, and celebrate our system of checks, balances, and limited government.”
Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) called him a “radical” on Twitter.
Brett Kavanaugh is a true Second Amendment radical. He believes assault weapon bans are unconstitutional, a position way out of the judicial mainstream, far to the right of even late Justice Scalia.
